Life insurance for children with Down Syndrome

I’m pleased to announce that our agency is now able to write up to $25,000 whole life insurance coverage on children with Down Syndrome in the State of Indiana.

No exam is required. Only one health question is asked. And as long as the child is not currently confined to a hospital or hospice or has been advised they have a terminal illness, they generally qualify.

Myth: Smoke Detectors wake you up

Many of us have believed that having smoke detectors in the home will save us and our children should a fire occur. The video below provides shocking evidence that standard smoke detectors may be ineffective in waking children as they sleep…

Having smoke detectors that integrate parents voices telling their children that there is a fire in the house seems to be more effective. Of course, I recommend smoke detectors and a family escape plan for every residence. However, it appears we all should reexamine which types of detectors are most effective.

Eliot Spitzer resigns

Former Attorney General and current New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has resigned.  Proof positive that what goes around, comes around.

While attorney general, Eliot Spitzer made a name for himself with his aggressive pursuit of some of the largest insurance companies and agencies that represented them.  Wikipedia provides a nice summation of Mr. Spitzer’s prosecutions. While I won’t address the innocence or guilt of the alleged-offending companies, I will say that it was Mr. Spitzer’s reported intimidation of company principals that gave me pause. Among the casualties were Marsh & McLennan, AON, Maurice Greenberg of AIG, and John Whitehead of the Lower Manhattan Development Commission. Mr. Whitehead alleged that Spitzer threatened him with, “Mr. Whitehead, it’s now a war between us and you’ve fired the first shot. I will be coming after you. You will pay the price. This is only the beginning and you will pay dearly for what you have done. You will wish you had never written that letter.”  Several colleagues and I remarked that making a name for himself seemed the greater motive of Mr. Spitzer, overriding pursuit of the truth and the public good.

I won’t disagree that insurance companies can be self-serving. After all, they are in the business to make a profit. However, the great majority respect first the public they serve. There is little incentive to cheat the average person as such a business model fails in the long run; bad press and violating the public trust only weakens their ability to consistently show a profit to shareholders.

Call it Karma, or divine retribution. Eliot Spitzer may have believed privately that he was above the law.  The good people of New York will now ensure that he is judged by the same laws that the rest of us would be. Mr. Spitzer can’t bully his way out of this one.

Myth: I don’t qualify for life insurance

Individuals with chronic health conditions may mistakenly assume that they cannot obtain life insurance coverage. I’m here to tell you that coverage may be available, if you know where to look.

I’m referring to Graded Death Benefit policies available from life insurance companies.  Stated simply, such policies pay an increasing death benefit each year you’re insured with the company.  Let’s assume you apply for a $10,000 benefit policy. If death occurs in Year 1 when the policy is issued, the company will only return premiums paid. In Year 2, the  policy pays 50% of the death benefit, or $5,000.  The full death benefit ($10,000) is paid in Year 3 and every year thereafter.

In Indiana we have little trouble providing life insurance coverage for our clients with chronic illnesses, depending on how they answer one health question on the application.

Here’s the question:

“Are you currently confined to a hospital or hospice, or have you been told by a medical practitioner that you have a terminal illness?”

If the answer to that question is “No,” the application will most likely be approved.

Consider the opportunity for individuals with illnesses or diagnoses such as lupus, diabetes, HIV positive, mental or nervous disorders, alcoholism, drug abuse, non-terminal cancer, stroke, or heart disease: although they may not qualify for life insurance in the preferred market, coverage is probably available.
