Disaster Planning: Supplies You Should Stock Up On

Hurricane Katrina has shown us that we need to have a more than a disaster plan. The problem the survivors ran into was not having the supplies that they needed to see them through the aftermath. This is what most people do not think about when they make their disaster/emergency plans.

Whether you have to deal with hurricanes or live ‘Tornado Alley’ makes no difference. You can still end up having to deal with other types of disasters and having what you need on hand will solve a great deal of problems in the aftermath or a hurricane, earthquake, flood, fire, snow/ice storm or even a volcanic eruption. I will admit that it takes a good bit of luck to survive a disaster, but it also takes a great deal of preparation as well. Being well prepared will give you a fighting chance.

Following these simple steps will save you time and energy in the face of a disaster, and might even save your life:

* Always have plenty of these things: medicines, canned food and dry goods, soap, tooth paste, shampoo and toilet paper on hand. If you buy these items in large quantities, then you will have more than enough. Don't forget your transportation! Always keep the gas tank in your car Full. This will save you time and a good many headaches if you ever have to leave your home because of a disaster.

* Keep all of your important papers in an Emergency Box along with your emergency food and supplies where you can grab it quickly. Have an “Emergency Only” bank account set up in the local nationwide bank (i.e. Bank of America) with braches all over the country. You might also want to have an account set up with PayPal, or something like it, just for this reason. Be sure that you write down all personal information (e-mail address and/or user name and your password) and keep this with you. You can also keep it stored in your e-mail account. Have more than you need to survive in the aftermath of the disaster.

* Have $50 or more stashed in your Emergency Box.

* Learning to remain calm and centered in even the worst emergencies will also help you get through them. Regular meditation, a healthy diet and exercise plan tend to make things a whole lot easier to deal with when a disaster turns your life upside down.

No one ever wants to think about losing everything you own. That fear is what many people go out of their way to avoid facing. But if you have prepared yourself and your loved one for this possibility, then you can take heart in knowing that you will make it through whatever Mother Nature throws at you.
