Are You Insured Against Floods?

Owning a home is the biggest investment most people have. Besides being a big financial investment and obligation, a home is full of possessions that people treasure. It’s for that reason that people get them insured against disasters. Getting homeowner’s insurance is very important to protect your belongings. Are you aware that most homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover flooding, however? Did you ever think of getting special coverage?

For some people in certain parts of the world, flood insurance is absolutely necessary. If you happen to live in an area that might be flood-prone, it would be a wise move to cover yourself against flood damage. This is particularly true for people inhabiting the U.S. south-east, where hurricanes can wreak havoc on people’s property. If you live in an at-risk area, you should definitely consider it.

The disaster that most often comes into people’s minds when they think of the word is fire. But flooding can cause just as much damage, drowning everything in your home and rendering it useless. Don’t assume that you’re covered under your homeowner’s policy. It doesn’t cover flood damage. That means if you do suffer one, you’ll have to pay out of your own pocket. So why get into that situation in the first place? You can insure your home for a small amount of money against flooding. It’s easy to get, and relatively cheap. Despite what some people think, you aren’t “loaned” flood insurance; it offers complete coverage in case of a flood.

The series of recent hurricanes in the U.S. have brought home the message that flooding is dangerous and can do tremendous damage to people’s homes and neighborhoods. Possessions, finished work, and memories can be lost in the blink of an eye. If you live in an area where flooding is possible, remember that most insurance policies don’t take effect for 30 days following the time they are purchased. So there’s no time to lose. Get it now. It’s also a smart move to photograph and keep records of the possessions that you value inside your home. This will help when you need to make your claim. The most basic plans protect only structural damage, as well as damage to floors and rugs. There are more elaborate ones that include your possessions as well. It’s not hard to find the right plan that will suit your needs.

So how does one going about getting flood insurance? This is usually the biggest question people have. In reality, it’s not difficult at all. You can get it from a number of different companies, many of whom offer free quotes. That means they will survey your house and tell you what it will cost to insure. There’s quite a few national flood insurance policies that you can choose from in the U.S., and with free quotes available, you can pick and choose the right one. Remember, though, that getting a quote is important because everyone has different kinds of property and belongings. Make sure you get one before making the decision to insure yourself.
