Medicare Eligibility – If You Aren’t Old Enough Can You Still Get It?

The general requirement for getting Medicare coverage is to be at least sixty five years old and to have worked for ten years or more in a job that is covered by Medicare (your partner could have done this too). Also, you will have to be a permanent resident of the United States in order to receive Medicare.

But if you are not old enough to receive it you can still get some Medicare eligibility. There are some conditions that you will have to meet to gain your Medicare eligibility.

First, you will need to be able to prove that you are disabled and are unable to work or be able to get around places very easily without any assistance. You will have to receive disability benefits for a certain amount of time for Medicare eligibility though. You must have received disability benefits from Social Security for two years or more before you can gain your Medicare eligibility.

If you were a railroad worker and are under sixty five and are disabled you can get Medicare eligibility too. The Railroad Retirement Board is a retirement plan for former railroad workers. You can receive Medicare eligibility with at least two years of payments from the Railroad Retirement Board. If your profession has a retirement fund similar to this then you can use those payments too.

There are certain disorders that are Medicare eligible for people under the age of sixty five. The most general disorder that allows for Medicare eligibility is chronic renal failure. This is where the kidney fail to function over an extended period of time and require specific treatments. Dialysis is the most common form of treatment, although a kidney transplant can work in some cases. In the case that you have this condition and are under the age of sixty five you can receive Medicare benefits to help pay for the cost of the dialysis and other treatments that you will need.

The general rule of thumb for disorders that can give you Medicare eligibility is that the disorder is one that significantly limits your ability to live a healthy, common life. Treatments that require frequent hospital or medical care will allow for Medicare eligibility. But the most important part of this is that it should be one that renders you as legally disabled. Of course, you will have to wait for a period of time before you can get those benefits if you are receiving Social Security benefits from the government.

For more information on Medicare eligibility to those under sixty five years old be sure to visit your local Social Security office. You can get all of the information that is needed from the office.
