What to Look for in Medicare Drug Coverage

If you are on Medicare and you need prescription drugs then you should be aware that you can get the costs of most of your drugs taken care of. The level of Medicare drug coverage that you can receive can help to pay off the costs of most or all of your prescriptions, and it can cover various different forms of prescriptions. However, there are some limitations as to what Medicare drug coverage can handle.

Medicare drug coverage is listed under Part D of Medicare. This has been in effect since 2006 after the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act was passed. This allows for subsidies and other tax cuts to help guarantee a Medicare patient access to prescriptions at lower or no costs.

The plan that you use for Medicare drug coverage will cover specific kinds of drugs. This is because Medicare drug coverage is not standardized like Parts A and B of Medicare. Some plans will cover specific kinds of medicines, and some will not cover those medicines at all. Also, certain plans will offer different levels of coverage in terms of how much you would have to pay for prescriptions.

While plans will be different in terms of what drugs they will cover there are some that all forms of Medicare drug coverage will not be able to take care of in any circumstances. Barbiturates and cough suppressants are explicitly excluded from all Medicare drug coverage plans. Psychoactive drugs like benzodiazepines are not covered either. Fertility drugs and drugs that fight erectile dysfunction are not covered as well.

In the case that the Medicare drug coverage plan that you are on does take any of these drugs your plan will not be able to bill Medicare for the costs of those drugs.

While Medicare drug coverage under Plan D can be useful it is not mandatory. It is a voluntary process that allows for you to be able to choose your own individual Medicare drug coverage plan. This is needed so that you will be able to get the drugs that you need covered.

The Prescription Drug Plan Finder can be used to help you with getting the right Medicare drug coverage plan that you need. By consulting your local Medicare office for information you can tell them what drugs you need so that you can find what Medicare drug coverage plan will work for your individual need.

Medicare drug coverage is a part of Medicare that is especially personalized because it will work to help you with paying off the costs of the drugs that you specific need. However, it will not cover every type of drug that is on the market. You can learn more about Medicare drug coverage and how it can help you at your local Medicare office.
