There is some great statistical evidence of the dangers young drivers face on the road at the Insurance Information Institute’s website. Here’s an excerpt:
“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of
death among 15- to 20-year olds. According to the U.S. Department of
Transportation, 3,620 drivers in this group died in car crashes in 2004,
accounting for 14 percent of all the drivers involved in fatal crashes and 18
percent of all the drivers involved in police-reported crashes. Twenty-four
percent of the teen drivers killed were intoxicated. In 2002 (latest data
available) the estimated economic cost of police-reported crashes involving
drivers between the ages of 15 and 20 years old was $40.8 billion, according to
the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).”
They also provide excellent information about Graduated License
programs by state.
